MakatiMed MedTech Interns win award for TB research paper

Four of MakatiMed’s Pathology & Laboratory Medical Technology Interns received the “Best Research Paper” National Level award for their thesis entitled “Evaluation of the Antimycobacterial Property of  the Chromatographic Fractions of  Wrightia antidysenterica Chloroform Leaf Extract Against Multi-drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR TB)” Mia Alchelle U. Alegre, Kyarra V. Bautista, Alyanna C. Cacas, and Nicole DC. Distor received the award during the Annual Convention of the Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health (PASMETH) in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on May 3. The same paper also won the “Best Oral Presentation” in the Regional Awards held at Far Eastern University on April 6. The paper was co-written with Caryl Jill M. Llobrera, Lianne S. Solacito, Edilberto P. Manahan, and Oliver B. Villaflores. Many  strains  of  tuberculosis (TB) show  resistance  to  the  commonly  used  TB  drugs.  One  of  these  strains  is the  Multidrug-resistant  TB  (MDR  TB),  a  form  of  tuberculosis  caused  by  a  bacteria  resistant to isoniazid  and  rifampin,  the  two  most  potent  drugs  used  to  treat  patients  with  tuberculosis.  The  study  aims  to evaluate  the  antimycobacterial  property  of Wrightia  antidysenterica  chloroform leaf extract. Wrightia  antidysenterica  is known locally as “White Angel”.
